The seven day juice fast is a simple, detox type of diet plan that promises fast weight loss effects. Since more than being a weight loss diet, it is known as a detox diet, it is apt that we delve into the discussion of what detox diets are about. This first part gives an overview of the definition and explanation of the detox diet, as well as its supposed benefits.

A detox diet, roots from the word detoxification, or literally speaking, it is the act of flushing out harmful toxins in the body such as drugs, food additives, metals like lead and other chemicals that are deemed to be harmful for the body. These detox type of diets are usually short-termed, and aims to emphasize healthy foods that aid in the detoxification process and usually dieters of this type try to minimize consumption of other regular foods. Because of these methods through the detox diet, one may promote or speed up the digestive process and notice an increase in frequency of urination and defecation.

By going into a detox diet, people that have gone through it have shared and have testified into experiencing clarity in all dimensions of the body. Aside from the weight loss, detox dieters have also seen significant clearing up of their skin, increased concentration and increased or improved energy levels.

The science behind the detox diet rests in its capacity to reduce the “body burden” or the accumulated waste products in the cells. Research suggests that we are exposed to various pollutants and toxins on a day to day basis because of out modern lifestyle, and unhealthy food choices or unhealthy diets do not help in eliminating these toxins, but rather they act as “fat bubbles” and they store and accumulate it. Because of these findings, the accumulation of the toxins in the body are said to be the link in the increase of lifestyle related diseases such as hypertension or high blood pressure, hyperglycemia or diabetes, and ultimately obesity and obesity related diseases.

A detox diet however, is not a diet that anyone can undertake without careful consideration or planning. It is contraindicated for people that are pregnant, and/or nursing, those with identified pre-existing medical conditions such as anemia, kidney disease, liver disease, autoimmune diseases or even cancer.

Other considerations, as well as side effects and critics’ opinion of the detox diet will be discussed in the second part of this article.
