SOUTH BEACH DIET GUIDE (part 1)
Posted on 22 December 2009 by Diet Expert
The south beach diet program in brief consists of three phases. The first phase which is the strictest phase of the diet last for the first 14 days. The second phase follows after, and in this phase there is seen a slow introduction of the banned foods of the first phase. Finally there is the third phase which shows the dieters how they can maintain this new diet and their new bodies. In order to explain in depth how to follow the program, a detailed discussion of each phase follows.
As said the first phase is the first 14 days into the south beach diet. This is considered to be the strictest of all the phases because it is in this phase that one should be overly conscious of what he eats taking note of the foods that is allowed and those that are banned for this phase. Even though this phase is the strictest, these first 14 days of the south beach diet is also the most rewarding as weight loss of about as much as 14 lbs can be expected in this phase.
In this first phase, foods that are high on the ‘glycemic index’ are cut down on, these include mostly the carbohydrates. Some of the restricted foods in the first phase include meats (such as beef, chicken or ham), some vegetables (such as carrots, peas and corn), starch-rich foods (such as breads, pasta and rice), sugar-rich foods (such as sweets, candy and ice cream), finally, also included in the list are beverages such as fruit juices, alcohol, and whole milk.
While the dieter cuts back on the above mentioned list of foods, they would not be deprived of nutrition as the south beach diet still maintains a wide range of foods that are acceptable to be eaten in this stage. This list of approved foods is rich in protein and is mainly constituted of nuts (like almonds, cashews or macadamias), beans (such as peas and pinto beans), and vegetables (such as tomatoes, spinach, mushrooms and lettuce).
For a more detailed list of the restricted and approved foods, one can check search the net or read the books regarding south beach diet.
Though it is only recommended for a period of 14 days or two weeks, some people may opt to stay longer on the first phase of the south beach diet to continue burning fats and losing weight. It is to be noted however that one cannot stay for too long in this type of diet and eventually they must move on to the second phase.
The details of the second phase of the diet shall be discussed in the proceeding article.
